Email is one of the main communication channels for both personal and commercial dealings.  Nowadays, fraudsters would hack email accounts, and cheat recipients by all possible means to make remittances.  The Hong Kong Police Force call on all email users to be alert of suspicious emails and raise their awareness in preventing this kind of scam.

Here is a common scenario:

Company A has been doing business with Company B for years and they mainly communicate by email.  One day A suddenly requested B to credit amount payable to a newly designated account.  Without extra confirmation, Company B followed the email request and banked in the amount.  However, it turned out the newly designated bank account does not belong to Company A, and that request of account change email was fictitious and sent by fraudsters stealing Company A’s email account.

Hence, whenever it involves a sudden change of recipient’s bank account number, business should contact their partner by phone to verify the request.  In that case, both parties may avoid the loss of money and reputation.

Moreover, it’s reported frequently that some fraudsters sent phishing email in the name similar to banks or other financial institutions, containing malicious URL or attachment.  Some victims have suffered password leaks with losses.  Hence, it’s highly recommended to verify sender address and not to click or open any URL or attachment sent by strangers.  If concerned, recipients can simply call the sender for verification before taking actions.
