Recent news has it that SMEs and educational institutions in Hong Kong get caught by ransomware: a virus which encrypts computer files and asks for ransom for the decryption key.

Since anti-virus software may recognize it as a normal encryption program, it is hard to detect.

What would happen when the virus is activated? Any prevention tips? UDomain expert answers your questions right here!

UDomain analyzes cyber-attack methods by using domain names:
  • Register Similar Domain Names
Hackers will register domain names which users may type incorrect easily (i.e. type .com into .om) & create phishing sites.  If the user clicks any buttons after accessing the phishing sites, malicious software will be downloaded and steal user password information relating to programs, or destroy data stored by hardware.

  • Register Expired Domain Names
To enhance the effectiveness of attacks, hackers will register expired domain names and place advertisements in well-known sites (e.g. New York Times, Newsweek, BBC, AOL and answer.com).
